Jahorina and Bjelasnica hosted alpine skiing events during the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, yet today they offer very different skiing experiences. Jahorina has undergone major investments in recent years and transformed into a modern ski resort, while Bjelasnica kept its raw and challenging character with only one modern lift. If you are planning a ski trip to Sarajevo region, here is everything you need to know before deciding Jahorina or Bjelasnica, which ski resort is better.

Jahorina is significantly larger than Bjelasnica. It offers around 47 km of pistes, while Bjelasnica has only 14.3 km of runs.
Jahorina was host to women competition and slopes are not extremely steep. The resort is dominated by blue and red runs, making it ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers. The mountain has improved a lot in recent years thanks to new lifts, additional slopes and a modern snow-making system.
Bjelasnica is a completely different story. It was host to men competition during Olympics. Red and black pistes dominate the mountain and some of them are very steep. The famous Olympic downhill “Olimpijski Spust” reaches gradients up to 60%, making it one of the most challenging runs in the region.
| Bjelasnica | Jahorina | |
| Blue | 4.8 km (33.5%) | 20 km (43%) |
| Red | 7.8 km (54,5%) | 22 km (47 %) |
| Black | 1.65 km (12%) | 5 km (10 %) |
| TOTAL | 14.3 km | 47 km |
However, Bjelasnica is small and expert skiers might run out of new terrain after a day or two. Jahorina on the other hand offers more variety and better lift infrastructure, which makes it suitable for longer ski holidays.
Both resorts can get crowded during weekends and peak season, but it is easier to get away from crowds on Jahorina since it is bigger and less locals from Sarajevo visit it.
When it comes to freeride, both mountains have interesting terrain. Jahorina has several off-piste zones around lifts 4 and 5 and in forested areas near piste 6. Bjelasnica offers open slopes around the six-seater chairlift and above the main ski area when conditions allow it.
When it comes to fun park Bjelasnica is better, it has small freestyle zone with a few kickers and rails. On the other hand, Jahorina doesn’t have snow park.

Both resorts offer great value for money accommodation, which is one of the biggest advantages of skiing in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Jahorina has a wider choice of hotels and apartments located close to the slopes. Many accommodations are within walking distance from lifts, and several hotels offer spa facilities and restaurants.
Bjelasnica has fewer options but staying around the main flat field at the bottom of the slopes is the most practical choice if you don’t want to hike up hill at the end of a long day on snow.
Another advantage for both resorts is proximity to Sarajevo. The city is around 40 minutes away from both mountains, so visitors can combine skiing with sightseeing and nightlife in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bjelasnica has better connection to Sarajevo, there is public bus linking city centre and the resort during weekend days (check it online before you plan your trip).

Jahorina has a more developed après-ski scene. Restaurants around the mountain serve excellent local food, and places near the main lifts often host parties and events during the ski season.
Bjelasnica is quieter and more focused on skiing itself. There are a few places to eat and relax near the lifts, but nightlife is limited compared to Jahorina.
Luckily, Sarajevo is close to both resorts, so you can always finish your ski day in the city with traditional Bosnian cuisine and lively bars.

Choosing between Jahorina and Bjelasnica depends on what you are looking for in a ski holiday.
Jahorina
Bjelasnica
If you want a complete ski holiday with variety and comfort, Jahorina is the better choice. On the other hand, if you prefer steep and challenging slopes, Bjelasnica might suit you better. If you have enough time, the best option is to combine both ski resorts. Spend two days on Bjelasnica exploring its challenging slopes, and three to four days on Jahorina enjoying its larger ski area and modern lift system. This way you get the best of both worlds and experience skiing on the historic mountains that hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics.
